Bellroy All Conditions Wallet Review

Hi this is Trevor with LeatherWallets.org. In this series of videos we are looking at water resistant wallets and in this particular video we're looking at the Bell r oy All Conditions wallet. This is how it comes. Actually the first time... The first order I got was in a plastic bag, and you could tell it had already been opened and used and so I sent that back. This is how the second one came. All right. Let's open it up and check it out. So you've got the iconic Bellroy sleeve box here and some tissue paper and then the wallet. This is a zippered Wallet. Inside is this box. "4-12 cards, super slim, all conditions, water resistant, zip, 3 year warranty". This is the leather option.

You can see the orange leather here it looks like a top grain leather. All right, the stitching on it. The stitching looks all right, it looks like it may be a nylon stitching. I can't tell for sure but it looks all right. You've got, where the stress points are, you've got a little bit of doubling up and some thicker strands. Where the wallet would tend to open. Overall it's not bad. I don't see any major issues with the stitching. The leather feels like top grain. It smells OK. The smell, there is too much other stuff to tell for sure, you get some chemical smell more than a true leather.

The zipper. So it's a YKK aquaguard zipper. You can tell that's pretty heavy duty and definitely takes some pull.

Inside the wallet we've got these little flaps. So two pockets on one side and one pocket on the other and then it looks like you could probably just put anything else in the middle.

Let's go ahead and see, what kind of capacity we have for this guy. Got some cards here. Let's start with these pockets, start with the hardest one first. So a little resistance getting it all the way down, it is all the way down now. Next pocket. That's it. So they're not... That feels like it should go down more but it's not. The cards are ending at about, my thumbs are in the way. Cards are ending (where's my pointer) about here. It looks like it has a little bit more space. The y have sewn that or cut it off from the pockets so that it doesn't go all the way down. There's not a lot of slack so it's going to be a little bit difficult getting these cards out. Let's go ahead and put one over here. We've got three cards in there now let's put a fourth and a fifth. It is getting kind of stiff. Let's put one more on this side. So that's six. That's about it. That's about what I want to put. Then fold up some bills that will barely fit or not. We may have to triple fold these guys. Let's drop this down to 10 and try triple folding it, something like that. That will be fine. There we go. So we got six cards, ten bills.

Once you broke this in a little bit... This isn't a letter on the inside. So it's not going to stretch that much. You could probably get a couple more, one or two more cards if you wanted to skip the bills. You can fit a bunch more cards and just sit them in the center, like that.

So this is one of those wallets that is water resistant but could also be a good everyday use wallet. It's got a large capacity. These cards, these slots are not that easy to get out and especially if you want to pull one out. So, the best course of use: Put cards that you don't use that much, or that you use in an emergency into these slots and then throw the rest of your cards in there. And then when you want to get your card out you could flip through and pull a card out. No problem. All right so that takes care of capacity.

Let's look at the stitching on the inside. No big changes from the outside. There's something in there. I don't know what it is, it's like a cardboard or plastic to stiffen up the sides. And probably the back along here. It is very light weight. So let's check that out. 36 grams.

This does not list any RFID blocking capabilities. So let's go ahead and test that. Got it there. All right let's go ahead and test the 125 kilohertz got that guy in there. And this guy on, and it reads it fine. So no RFID blocking in the wallet.

Now we're going to test this wallet's ability to resist water and the way we're going to test that is, we have a bunch of these stickers here. You'll normally find these stickers inside electronics, and what they do is they change color when they come in contact with water. So we're going to take a bunch of these. Stick it onto cards put the cards in this wallet and then take it outside and get it wet. We're going to start with a light drizzle. I'm going to try to simulate that and then work our way up to splashes and then if it does that well we'll get down to submersing. So this wallet does not have an IPS value - its rated ability to resist water. It just markets its ability without being certified. All right so the next step is to test its ability to resist water. We'll do that now. We're outside in my backyard. I have got all the wallets set up. We're going to do the water test so each of them have a card like this in it that has these little dots that turn colors. See they turn red when water hits it. On the backside we have some tissue paper taped to it so we can use that as an indicator as well. So let's get started. All right test one, light spritz.

Well we're back from the rain shower and we've got the Bellroy All Conditions wallet here. Let's go ahead and open this guy up and see how we did. I imagine we did well. The rain shower was straight down so I don't expect it is wet. This tissue paper looks fine and no indications on any of those.

So test worked out great for the Bellroy. All right since the Bellroy did so well in our rain test I decided we would up the ante here and we've got the card here. We see no indicators are red and the tissue paper looks brand new. All right so we're just going to set it in here. We will put it in this pocket here. Actually we will put it in this pocket. That card is secure.

So this is what I call the dunk test. Basically you're on a walk and you fall into the river or whatever and your wallet gets wet. So we're going to simulate that. Are you ready? La la la, what a a nice river. Ah, no my wallet! Well. All right. Let's see. Let's see what happens here. What's interesting is, this is the only wallet that we have in this group that's leather. So I'm just going to dry up the outside. What I don't want to have happen is to have the drops fall in and ruin our test. Let's open her up. Remember these are the YKK zippers that feel very good, they feel like a wet suit type zipper. The card so far looks good no indicators are red. The tissue paper is still good. No wetness inside. Well all right now we're going to have to do the submerse test. What if you accidentally submersed with this wallet. We're going to get those indicators to light up. All right. So we're going to drop it and it feels like it will float.

We'll see if it floats and then we'll push it under. Here we go. Yep it floats, it floats pretty good. That's good. We'll hold it under the water. I saw some bubbles, bubbles are a bad sign. I'm pretty sure some water got through those zippers. So let's dry it off a little bit. And then we'll check it out. Dry off my hands. I don't think this is going to work out. Definitely water on the inside here. It popped at least two of these indicators. We got that one, it's red, and that one. Tissue paper looks OK though. So that was on the inside, it was stuck to the backside. Water got into the center but didn't work its way behind that card. But still, very good for a wallet that doesn't provide a certified rating. It passed our rain test, our dunk test, but didn't pass the submersible test.

This may be a wallet that you want to carry every day I mean it's not that impractical and it has some definite water resistance to it. It did better then a number of the walls that we tested, so consider that. This is the most expensive wallet that we tested in this group. The construction was fine. I didn't find any faults there. The cash and card capacity was OK. You did have to fold up the bills a little bit smaller because they wouldn't fit folded in half. And the pockets were a little tight.

So as I mentioned in the review the side pockets would be useful for cards that are not used very often and set everything else right in the center there.
